Sleepless nights in the motel- Fighting back tears from the pain, Of bones, broken ribs, and torn tendons With doubts that you'd be well again. Haze of the booze and pain killers- A mix that will never go well... They'll turn bad to worse, a cowboy's curse, And each sunset a season in Hell. The pain always worsens at nightfall- The hours just crawl by like years. And memories keep a man comp'ny- His doubts and frustrations and fears. You vow that you'll quit rodeoin'- If you only can make it through this... But when you can walk, those vows were just talk. Ignorance really is bliss. But your day is comin' too, youngster. So ride while you still have your youth! Like all of the rest of us has-beens, You'll come to your 'moment of truth'. The mirror will tell the sad story- The dark hair will soon turn to gray; There'll be lines in your face- to take the smiles' place You'll come to the parting of ways. You know, rodeo is a seductress- She will spin you a head full of lies. When you're old, or get hurt, you'll be left in the dirt- Just don't let it be a surprise. |

Wow, what a story! I can understand that young people are fascinated by rodeos, but the risks of being hurt is great no doubt. Something to remember when the hair turns white! Enjoyed your tale! Love, Margherita ![]() |

I always enjoy your poetry Gunslinger. By the way, I have never ridden in a rodeo in my life but I'm 63 and deal with the pain of arthritis on a daily basis. Ida |
