Crisp around the edges
almost beautiful
like fried eggs in bacon grease
poached sea turtles
and winter grass

Strangled by the current's ember
the hose leans into the brittle claim of leaves
blown about in air of nip-tuck
cameras shutter as they flutter

Fire eats the forest ants
and snaps the smallest thing alive
'til trees are bones and sky is smoke
as branches put on flaming coats

Hold still the sky has come unglued
the wind is in me not just the air
when my hair falls in curtains
across the aching and I turn away
just not today

Martie, whenever I see a newscast of the devastation that the fires are wreaking in California, I have thought of you and some of our other pipsters. I hope none of your are in the paths of the infernos.

I could feel your words ~ and the pain inherent in them.

I'm in a safe place...not to worry...my son is about 5 miles away from the inferno in Orange County, Lake Arrowhead where I honeymooned and Green Valley Lake, my favorite place to fish, are not so lucky.  There is smoke everywhere.  Thanks for your thoughts.

powerful and (obviously) timely 'write!'

[a fine 'impressionistic' synopsis of a
  very sad reality...via 'global warming,'
these kinds of circumstances will only
  ultimately increase in frequency and
  devastative intensity; etc.]

serious applause!

Good to know you are safe, dear Martie.

How intense your poetic description of this deplorable event!

Love and hugs.

That's how I am here today -- crispy eyes and black soot boogers.....and hot-hot, but the sun looks like a pumpkin in the sky.

Oh Martie, I am so concerned about you and all my family/friends in CA! I hope things will settle down, and the Santa Ana winds will cease for this fall...though I know they tend to kick up around Halloween, making the coastline warm, and all the woooded areas a virtual tinderbox.
Keep that hose handy, and masks to filter the air. My thoughts are with all of you, in my birth state!

I can't even imagine the loss you are all feeling down there, and I am glad it is finally under some control.  Stay safe, and make sure you have good masks to combat the air pollution Martie.

You wrote the pain of California well - too well.

Martie I really feel for you dear lady and

wish you a safe haven from those devastating fires. Here in Australia we suffer terrible bush fires as well, although perhaps not as bad as you are suffering this year. Good luck.

MartieSis~

The fires have been too, too close to loved ones for comfort~

My sister said she cried and the tears left trails in the soot on her face~

I pray it ends soon ... so many are suffering tremendous losses~

Love you Sis~

Dear One,  it is wonderful to know that you
are well, safe and not breathing tooooo much
of the smoke....All of it is a tragedy, such
a painful scene.  Thankful that there have
not been too many casualties....

Hugs Party Marti.....

Never one to forget a home state...
all I can see in this poem
is the heartbreak through
flame-choked skies...

well done, indeed, Sissie.
