the Aegis's Curse

A heavy draw of breath
By lips already touching the water’s salt
Sucks cold air and daggers into his lungs
As his arms battle for the surface
Battle as always

It had gotten him through the war
for all the horrors he’d seen
none had ever touched him through
the armour’s thick plated embrace.
The same cold arms that now
pulled him down, under water

Yes, through the war he’d marched
confident for the black metal on his chest
Barely scathed himself, he’d seen the horrors
but always cowered in time
And now he was in the Promised Land
A spotless sea
But he no longer belonged

As his lips finally closed to keep the water out
and his eyes sought cover from the salt
he wrung his hands over his body, looking
For the screw or the switch to undo his aegis
But the years of faithful service
Had seemed to melt it to his flesh

Somewhere under the heavy black steel
His hot flesh was hidden where even he couldn’t find it
burning for air, dragged down deep
finally he folded his arms ‘cross his bowels
hugging the protection like a dear twisted friend
accepting death, thanking the steel

as it had carried him through life
he could not do without anymore
and followed it to death.

(this seems the opposite situation of ‘Love of Freedom’, something I found in an old file)

Such turmoil woven through...very effective style to touch the reader with perception of the conflict inside the soul.
