Tsunami ( A World in Mourning) It was an ordinary morning When suddenly without warning Those giant waves Swept people to their graves And left the world in mourning... Huge boats were tossed Like childrens toys And whole communities lost Amidst the fear and noise As all the Tv stations Filled our screens with death A once proud and mighty nation Depicted scenes of devastation The pain etched on fathers faces As they clutched their childrens limp remains In unheard of far off places I can only guess at the depth of their pain Anguished survivors clutching at straws Pinning up pictures of missing kith & kin More casualties than in all of the world wars Sadly never to be seen agai I cannot contemplate the scale of the catastrophe Of more than 100,000 dead But the pain and suffering is brought home to me Gazing at my daughter sleeping soundly in her bed I could never comprehend Holding her lifeless body to my chest For I know my life would be at an end And no reason for living left That is why we must all pick up the 'phone And pledge as much money as we can To show the world it's not alone Please, help your fellow man.... |

When reading on such a grave subject, it almost turns other less 'significant' poetry pale. Very powerful, and welcome! Pops |

John... A great visual poem. I wondered as I read the poem whether you had personally been touched by an act of god, that is, a Tsunami. My dad, while alive, was a research mathematician/oceanographer studying Tsunamis. He worked at Scripps in La Jolla and then at the University of Hawaii. His wish was to be able to warn people before a Tsunami hit land. Looking forward to reading some of your other poems. Lynn |

Thanks Lynn, No I have never had the misfortune to suffer anything on such a scale which makes the likes of that and 9/11 so incomprhensible. TV brings such horror into our living rooms on an all too frequent basis and we can sometimes get a little desensitised because of it.I hope that by writing about these things that it may prick the conscience of those who acknowledge the event but do not offer any help... Almost like the 'rubberneckers' who slow down to look at the auto wreck on the other side of the road & do not even consider calling the emergency services because " someone else will do it" .....
