Under the banner of heaven
Dwell those who have "seen the light"
Who would be willing to shed your blood
If you don't get your theology "right."

Under the banner of heaven
Are those who judge, deceive and kill
To spread their doctrine of love and peace
And bend non-believers to their will.

Under the banner of heaven
The truth is not as it may seem.
The reality is, and has always been,
That the end justifies the means.

Under the banner of heaven
Lies a history of blood and fire
And an endless struggle for power
By tyrants who never tire.

But under the banner of heaven
There's the eternal truth of the source,
That the message of love and peace will triumph
When it is not delivered by force.

Thank you Lady, I was a little worried about being burned at the stake for this one.
I don't think everybody appreciates it but you know, a real poet has to write what they feel.

Hi Eagle scorpion,
Yes, I'll bet we would make great friends, so I'll just consider you a friend from now on. Not everyone is as pleased with this poem as you are. I think there are some who would like to crucify me for expressing these thoughts but a true poet expresses what they feel. That's what poetry is all about.

Hi Ivor,
I'm sorry, I should have explained further.
I posted this poem first in another room on this site and a couple of other sites and it was not well received. Many of the people here are very nice and judged the poem on it's merits instead of their opinion of the subject.

Yes, there are many and have been many atrocities performed "under the banner of heaven".  I don't understand how some can object to what you have written because what you speak about has happened and is happening. You certainly haven't sucked the basis of this poem out of your thumb so well done on speaking out.  And I did enjoy the way you spoke out.  A good and thought provoking poem.

a fine, timely, and 'important' write!

There is often an incredible dichotomy (virtually a 'Grand Canyon') between
"organized religion" and true "Christianity!"  For centuries, "It is God's Will"
has been the excuse for 'Crusades' (and other warfare); genocide/ethnic
cleansing; terrorism; etc. The often atrocious and unconscionable behavior
of individuals and groups acting acting under a banner of one 'organized religion'
or another (allegedly in the name of God) has been the scourge of human history.

Applause!!

Thank you all for your comments.
Bruce. There will come a time when people will think for themselves. You and some of the others who have responded here are proof of that. When people realize that most religions preach love and peace and then kill each other to achieve it, maybe the light will come on.

I'm confused, with your words you have expressed your opinion and yet you seem to imply that you don't welcome others opinions...James

James.
I welcome all opinions but insist on being able to have my own as well. I did not say that I cannot take the critisism. I just said this poem did not go over well on another sight. A fact.

I found this one in the attic. I dusted it off.
It is a diamond of wisdom.
