THE MOUNTAIN MAN I always thought of him as "The Mountain Man" He had such dignity and quiet command. He stood along side Whittier Blvd. Like a captain at the helm, Surveying the traffic that invaded his realm. The first time I saw him, I was startled, Not just by his size But by his demeanor and the look in his eyes. Piercing eyes peered from under his cap, Boldly watching those who were watching him. His abundant gray hair, The full beard on his chin, A fringed serape draped over his frame, His size and his continence set him apart And created a visual work of art. A monument to stubborn independence. They said he was homeless, I preferred to think he was free And that his "Home" was wherever He chose it to be. Ida Werrett |

Good morning, Ida. Vividly descriptive and moving! ~ and your closing lines were the clincher. "They said he was homeless, I preferred to think he was free And that his "Home" was wherever He chose it to be." Very well-written and compassionate. May your home always be where your hat is. EA |
