WARRIORS I lie here on these skins, knowing I am close to the time of my passing. Soon I will join your father, my beloved husband, in the land of the Great Spirit. I am not scared, my sons, I look forward to being with my Chief again. I am proud of you all, never think that I played favorites, you …the oldest two are so different from your younger brother, how could I have ever treated you the same? Tribal Law suggests that the women of the Tribe leave the raising of the young males to the braves, that they might become great warriors and hunters. You are both like your grandfather, a great chief, your father’s father who believed in many wives, and in treating them as slaves and animals. I must admit that I do not admire this in you, I have seen you take that which was not yours to take, and although I have loved you, I have also despised some of the things you have done. I am most fortunate though that my husband did not treat me with such disrespect. I cannot enter into your tepees, for you have a coolness about you. You would have had me become squaw to another, that I might not be yours to be responsible for. You never could understand that I could never lay with another other than your father, my beloved companion of many years. You have both been quick to put on the paint of war, and lead your tribe into battles. Your bodies bear witness to the fact that you have suffered much, in fighting for freedom and for what you believe in. Your bravery will never be in question. I wear each of your scars upon my heart…your pain has been mine. Fear not my children, I am not asking you to take on the responsibility of your younger brother when I am gone. He will be most welcome in the camp of my brother and his family; all arrangements have thus been made. You are so strong, handsome and your people follow your lead. How could any mother not be proud of you? But the mightiest warrior of you all is my youngest son, him of the gentle bearing and serene soul. His scars - unlike yours are unseen. He has walked barefoot on the hot coals of hatred …because he is different. He has even been taunted at, by you, his brothers, yet he shows you nothing, but the highest esteem. Even you must admit it is with his arrow, that you have fared favorably with …for he has well studied the need for perfection of our simple weapons. He is purely a visionary, tempered with great patience and his knowledge surpasses that of the elders of the tribe. Heed well my words, my most beloved sons, He is a leader, and will lead you to peace, when you are too tired to fight on. You are followed in fear, but others will pursue your brother out of respect and love. Follow him they will, into the Valley of Peace, to places where the pastures are green and the waters are as clear as crystal. He is the promise of the future, a promise of harmony and insight between men of all color. The Shaman, revered brother of my Grandfather, has talked at much length into the winds and the Great Spirit, has answered him …that this will come about as law. Think on what I have said and live your lives with nobility, respect and empty your hearts of the hatreds within. I lie here on these skins, knowing I am close to the time of my passing. Soon I will join your father, my beloved husband, in the land of the Great Spirit. I am not scared my sons, I look forward to being with my Chief again. |

Your poetry never fails to touch my own SPIRIT. I had tears welling in my eyes and a lump in my throat. Exceptionally moving and poetic. I have missed your words, Spirited One. If this be a true story, then the tears will not just be rimming my eyes, they will be falling in torrents down my cheeks. Love & Manitou Light, EA |

quote: The youngest son a light warrior, an outsider in his brothers' eyes, yet this Mother knows with the wisdom of those who have lived in deep awareness, that he represents the future. A story that touches the heart deeply and describes so powerfully the two different ways of leaders ... the Mother knows. My compliments for this excellent piece. Love, Margherita |
