A Wild Ride

this year fifty candles
will adorn my birthday
and I don’t know if I am
any wiser than I was at 20
but I do know I am better
there is strength in me
that wasn’t there in youth
I like myself a lot more now
somehow my skin fits me
and I am more comfortable
how far it is that I have come
from private sock-monkey hugs
and late night Uncle Remus stories
I have not out grown them
they are just different to me
I collect them now to pass on
to my future grand children
on a someday night with me
I have know many men with time
males of family, friends, lovers
and in someway I have loved them all
even the ones with the beautiful lies
that made me cry broken hearted
or tenderly mended this soul
in the journey that is my life
I remember a time that all needed
was for someone to just believe in me
and now the direction changes again
to be someone to be believed in
and right now to be honest …
I’m not too sure where it is I’m going
but with fifty candles I do know this
it is not the destination, it’s the ride
