I hit the buzzer on the door the one that wasn't there before then I smiled angelically with horns, so they would know it's me. Granted entrance to the same place where they once knew my name-- the bartender did not know me-- "the usual" had changed. My stool was taken by some guy who seemed to be quite hypnotized by the ice that didn't care if he drank his drink or not. "What will you have?" she asked of me-- I tried to think of the same drink that I used to order when I was more often in my cups. There was no familiar face the music on the juke was changed to stuff I knew yet never heard I no longer knew the words and prayed I never would again toss a shot to coax my throat to say things better left unsaid. cliches are words repeated that are taken as to be a fact-- It's said you can't go home again and no one loses a true friend no one can turn back the clock new threads cannot mend old frocks books cannot be worthy deemed by the covers that we read. But I have found the spine will tell by bindings cracked from loving dwell of eyes upon the pages worn and taped together whence was torn by eager readers' avarice and tiny dog ear corners bent-- I can always tell time spent when passages are fingerworn. These are the thoughts I had to think while I had my "goodbye" drink staring into that smoked glass glad that all those times had passed and spared me most of memory. Then I called to pay the tab-- they told me "ladies drink for free." I shook my head and left them cash and bought the shackles tempting me to stay where I do not belong. |

Karen You've touched a place I find within someone I love, who, bless him, has changed the way he sees the things he used to love, even me. |

I'm so happy you feel you don't belong there anymore, Karen. I'm not a prude, but the drinking can cause or deepen depression and you don't need that. I'm happy to see you posting. Love and prayers, Rae |

*wince* Rae? I didn't mean to mislead you. I have a glass of wine to my left, right now as I type. So forgive me for disappointing you, but I can't accept congratulations for something that I didn't do--it just ain't honest? yanno? I thank you tho. This was just my goodbye to "the life" that I once thought was "home". But thank you, dear friend. (Sometimes I think I'm more addicted to "whine" than wine though. ) Thanks, both for reading. Martie? Rae? |

then I smiled angelically with horns, so they would know it's me. this made me smile...thinking, yes, only you...you know, your poems are so touching, so brutally honest, yet contains a wonder, for so much yet to come...reading you is like hearing an experience of testimony, Karen, you are so wise, and true to self...in the honesty, courage, and strong will your words display...insightful and loving... But I have found the spine will tell by bindings cracked from loving dwell of eyes upon the pages worn and taped together whence was torn by eager readers' avarice and tiny dog ear corners bent-- I can always tell time spent when passages are fingerworn. loved this Karen I always enjoy the total of your words. I just relate to the pain of some more than others..and those I leave out of my responses... Wishing you relief and comfort wherever you feel to be "home". M |

Maureen took the stanza I thought displayed the theme well... My glass sits to my right. Now and then. |

serenity, My favorite piece! Gosh, this is soooo good! I'm awake now reading it a second time, and I am in awe. I'm used to reading another of your styles, whereas, I try to uncover levels and depths of meaning. When I read this last night, I was in that mode of thinking, and missed what was right before me. As I wrote, I am mezmorized by the seemingly effortless flow of imagery and rhythm. I humbly bow! Much enjoyed, Angel with Hidden Horns, AHH... |

Serenity blaze, Don't forget to capitalize "Cliches" in the line: "cliches are words repeated that" Otherwise, I like it loads. Bobby |

Karen, you are always a pleasure to read. You are a smart writer and you articulate very well. You also are brutally honest with yourself and sometimes others. Always in a way that is part of your nature. (A good thing)... thanx, Barry |

You are one fascinating lady. Just came back from a vacation and found you have been writing and what writing! You are a Queen in my eyes. Read this four times in the last two days. Had to keep coming back. Thank you, your honesty and humility shine through. LateArrival |
