Loving knows as lovers pass Fancy roaming free: Look into the looking glass, Tell me what you see? I see a sparkle, Dance of sun on hair Memories of playfulness Before I was aware. My seeds are scattered wide, Rooted in the mire, The might-be or the passing glance That sets the breast afire. I see a moonbeam Lighting on her arm; Romance is my birth-sign, Slighting does me harm. Comfort is my bounty, Rising out of pain; Pleasure my ambrosia, Solitude my bane. Why must we long so For that which cannot be? Looking in the mirror now, What is it you see? I see them weeping, Turmoil of the soul; Bitterness my aftermath, Pitiless and cruel. Many forms are mine to hold Few of these are pure - That when such perfect lovers meet The bond is all the truer. If handsome is as handsome does Then Love's an ugly child: Who never felt a futile lust Has surely had it mild. It doesn't care for pain or loss, A broken heart will bleed - But if and when Love gets it right, Why then - there's bliss indeed! Poetry is just the evidence of life. |
