Voice of My Own grandma’s blue hair sits in the porch swing yellow apron ruffles in the summer wind white red rimmed metal colander lap perched breeze found bobby pin slips letting hair fall reaches up to reclaim normal Saturday of shelling peas for Sunday chicken dinner brown chain rust creaks warming up in peas clanging against metal in purple sound I sit wall backed to the porch cool afternoon as she begins a pure white note church song I join in as natural as breathing next breath voice of my own learned to harmonize early on before long we are in a porch concert singing loud on this my favorite song “I come to the garden alone” “while the dew is still on the roses” “and the voice I hear” “echoes on my ear” “the sweetest sound “ “ I knoooooooooooow” she started the songs of my soul the poetry of heart teaching me my voice as she says “The Old Rugged Cross” *** my favorite hymn “In The Garden” author unknown thanks mamaw this …is for you "no darkness has ever been deep enough to extinguish my personal knowledge of love" Anne Rice |

thanks she died when i was 7 but today reminded me of her and my Mississippi roots that run deep in my heart time and miles away from it |

oh Helen Mississippi memories are not all that different from Georgia memories and this had special meaning for me I am glad I did not miss it I can hear the voices clearly |
