Old Albert sat like stone near the corner windows. Imprisoned not by iron bars but by age and disability. His wife fluttered around him cawing harshly as Albert sat in silence staring out the window. When I was eight I would visit Albert. We would sit and talk with those long silences that men have when they sit together. One day Albert asked if the neighbor had a new dog. It was huge, Albert said. Only with the head of a dog but the body of a man. It would pace like a sentinel outside, back and forth, periodically glowering toward the house through yellow eyes. Of course the neighbor had no dog, and Albert soon died. It was years later I learned about Anubis, the Egyptian God.. with the head of a jackal and the body of a man, who escorted the newly dead to the afterlife. |

Larry, it always amazes me what people envision before passing on. Fortunate are those who listen. |
