in the shadows

Sitting sipping tea
here in the early morning still,
all the other animals,
two legged and four,
sleeping peacefully
before the pings and rings of bell
stir them from their quiet dreams;
I'm gathering the bits of will I need
to stand
before the sun can stagger up from cracking the horizon.

Last night
it felt odd to drink champagne without you,
listening to the rain,
thunder all around
and lightning dancing just for me
the way I'd often drawn them down
to make you shriek with glee,
the storm and I
we brought no harm to anyone,
I was careful
just having fun
with steady level buzz on good champagne;
I miss the taste of strawberries,
and you,
with McKennitt playing endlessly
in the background of awareness
until we were exhausted
tired and sore,
holding each other quietly
admiring our stamina
waiting for the dawn,
but last night it was just me
the best that I could do
within my quiet emptiness
and I drank down a magnum of those memories,
alone.

I was not sleeping then
but soft adrift in the same kinds of memories

a truly beautiful one and very emotional.
and very powerful and manly.

"but last night it was just me
the best that I could do
within my quiet emptiness
and I drank down a magnum of those memories,
alone."...alone but it does not give a lonely feelings. Every word has a strong voice here.

beautiful. thank you.

A most touching write, dear icebox, and one I can relate to but some would say, "thank you for the memories".  I wonder though about that - maybe memories hurt more than the not ever having had.

hmmmmmm....does one ever forget? or are we to walk through life with little pieces missing?

You have a way with words.

My heart feels you and was deeply moved by your poem.  In my mind, this is what poetry is all about.

I enjoyed the way you built the picture, and the feeling.
