Skippy dog and I went out for a run
underneath the earliest morning sun.
He wanted to run fast, full speed ahead,
with me he took a slow leisurely stroll instead.
Then Skippy dog did spy
two dragon(s)fly by
cruising at low altitude
80mph in northern sky.
They were searching for skeeters,
the terrorists of the north.
And Skippy knew
he could catch them.
But it was Catch 22....
he was on a leash,
the leash kept him grounded
and he was confounded,
a terrier...out-hounded???
Those dragonflies turned 'round
and looked him square in the face,
and laughed at his effort,
it wasn't even a fair race!
The jaws of poor Skippy
scowled in disbelief,
a terrier outfoxed
by dragonflies,
Good grief!!!
"Can't you run any faster?"
Won't you please set me free?
No self-respecting terrier
would let a dragon
fly free!"
But alas, this old lady
said "Just let them be!"
So Skippy dog left
with his tail hanging down,
hoping no other dogs were around
to see him drown in such
dog-faced misery.
"I'm sorry, Skippy.
But God meant for dragons
to be free,
just the same
as you and me."

I think dear Skippy understood, he will catch them in his dreams and run at lightspeed.

Poignant story, dear Kacy, beautifully rendered.

Thanks to each of you for reading and commenting. This is a repost from my Alaska days, where I daily walked/ran Skippydog, my Jack Russel Terrier. No matter the weather outside, Skippy and I would take a walk and he would ALWAYS be on the prowl for something small to pounce on. Usually, it was a 'careless' rodent that underestimated a JRT's lightning speed and aim. His attempts to catch butterflies, moths, and dragonflies sometimes left him anxious.

Kacy. And did you know I just finished reading a book in which dragons featured prominently?
I do remember Skippy from Alaska vicariously through you.
All day my ears have been whistling and roaring so I cannot hear much to speak above----well, nothing really.
"  "Pass the time" by "sleeping."  Ghrrrrrrgh.
Well tomorrow.

The title drew me in right away. What a great narrative story you give us.

I had to come back to this again.  It reminds me of when my huskey puppy discovered ravens.  Unfortunately, it was when we were on the banks of the river and he took off, entranced with the whoosing of the wings and the bird in flight.  I saw his potential as a sprint dog when he ran -- he ran, but came back unscathed. He still thinks that ravens are the very best birds.

I kinda agree with him.
