Listening to every heart

Tornado’s Season

I don’t know the names of the lost,
I only know they lived in a town that was
but a speck on land compared to New York
or Los Angeles…
but those who lived in Greensburg, Kansas
were good and honest Midwesterners of a tourist town
the county seat, farmers and ranchers,
with the world’s deepest well, and they knew
of the land upon which they lived was for only
a borrowed time, until their time met up quick
with shadows, raging winds, unrelenting rains.

It will take time to realize, even try to understand
just how fast a town can disappear.
Or how great the number of lost will be.
Friends and family call, email us, needing an
instant message from us for proof, that we,
husbands and wives, children, too, were okay.
We tell them even our dog is ok, too.

Tonight I listened to my dog, who veered
from her regular routine, curling round my ankles while
speaking with unspoken words, making me mind
some uncommonly great sense.

Exceptionally terrible weather is due us, they say,
for the next week or so.
We’ve moved to the basement with our necessities.
Water.  Scanner.  Cell phones.  Money, credit cards,
Each other.

He says, “the best area is there, in the middle, where
the steel beam holds up the house.”
I say the best area “is there, in the southwest corner.”
I don’t say that it just makes sense, when nothing does.

We wait.  Him, Abby, me.  We’ve all lived in Tornado Alley, which
stems from Texas/Oklahoma into the Kansas area up into Nebraska,
Ohio, Illinois, Indiana…

I don’t remember any of my dogs before
leading the way to the basement.
My thoughts are with the lost in time.  Even Abby knows
we are just acting out being safe.

You have me frightened, dear Karilea. This is incredibly powerful and captivating in its filtering anxiety.

I've seen some pictures of Greensburg after the tornado ... an unknown force of the wind has played a bad play there!

May you be safe and trust the dog's instinct, always!

My love and prayers are with you,
Margherita

Nodding here, although I am not as familiar with the tornado terror as I am with other things, I am very familiar with the rituals developed over time, things we do to feel safe. I thought often of how important my pets were during my time of crisis. I told myself they needed me--truth be told, it was the other way around.

I'm so glad you are safe sweetie--what a fierce trial to have to contend with.

Much love to you Kari.

I am glad that you are safe.
I have lived in Missouri for quite some years.
Tornado shows there too.
All I can do is pray.

SIL, I'm glad you've got Abby there...and I'm glad you've got a basement.  Nature is a harsh teacher but she has her mercies, too, as you know so well.  Trust your instincts, dear lady.  *bunch of hugs*....jo

Raw emotion was rampant in this powerful write! I was right there with you! ~ and not a very pleasant situation to be in!!!

Thank God, you and your family weathered the storm! Sending prayers for protection for all those who live in Tornado Alley!

Karilea, stay safe my friend. Email me and  let me know you are okay. Right now, it is pouring down rain. They are closing off some of the streets because of severe flooding. All I have to do is figure out, which way I will go to get to work this afternoon.

(yeah!!! another week of bad weather isn't it great) I am really getting tired of the weather in Kansas lately the rain alone is bad enough the threat of a tornado just makes it worse I am in Olathe so I have been experiencing my share of bad weather all we can do is pray and hang in there when it gets bad
