As dusk slips across the windy moor The sounds of battle shiver through my bones Was that the cry of a night bird taking flight Or the groan of a clansman falling, Reaching for his comrades Knowing none would reach home again? Were his thoughts of the lass he’d left Or the pain of his breath leaving; Did he taste his blood or just futility? Does he know I walk this spongy ground Shedding tears for him? |

"Did he taste his blood or just futility? Does he know I walk this spongy ground Shedding tears for him?" Unanswerable questions, layered with pain. Good to read you again, lady! |

. It was as stupid as a Japanese Banzai into guns at point blank range. Some never grow up or get the chance. Let's at least hope they were, (as often were in the Pacific), drunk at the time. John . [This message has been edited by Huan Yi (04-16-2007 04:50 PM).] |

It is so nice to see the poetry from the UK finally making it's way into the light. This has its voice but mingled with that are the memories we share of that proud, green land. a good commitee can decimate communication. |

Excellent treatment of one of my favorite themes. It made me go back and dig out my own effort from a few years back. Great write. |

Did he taste his blood or just futility? Does he know I walk this spongy ground sometimes, painful and cruel as it may seem, there are no answers to questions.... so so nice to read you again...I've missed you |

Agreeing with iliana here...one of your best. When I used to visit old battlefields and forts, I would just go off into a trance of sorts, and at times I felt like I was warping through time. This had that same effect. ![]() |

Excellent emotive 'write'....in addition to its 'universal'/timeless commentary on the sad futility of all war; etc.....for me personally, it evoked fine memories of my most recent visit (this past Sept.) to Scotland (my first and foremost 'love'!) MUCH applause! |

Midnitesun: It's good to be here... thank you so much! *S* Drauntz: You've given my afternoon such a smile... thank you! *S* Huan Yi: Long before the term came into use, men were cannon fodder... for God, for glory... for country, for cause. Thank you! *S* Seymour: You are so dear... thank you very much! *S* Andrew: And thank you for reading! *S* Kethry: I'll admit it... Scotland seeped its way right into my soul... and will probably flavor my poetry for years to come... if I can ever find the words to do it justice. *S* But with all that love for the land... my best memories are those of loving friends... Thank you... for then, for now... for always. *S* Gunslinger: Thank you so much - I loved your poem and am so glad you reposted it! *S* Sunshine: Thank YOU, sweet lady... very much! *S* Lady: I'm so glad it touched you... thank you very much! *S* EA: Thank you, my friend. *S* It's hard for me to be here much... but you always make me feel so welcome. *S* And yes... lassie it is. *S* Just before visiting Culloden, I'd walked through a churchyard where so many of the names were familiar... even if they'd lived long before the ones I knew who shared that name. Maybe that's why I felt so welcomed there... so at home. *S* Marge: You don't know how much your words mean to me... I think fear of giving the memories less than they deserve had kept my pen from pouring out words... thank you!!! Lee: I've missed you, too, dear lady... And you're right... sometimes, there are no answers... just questions. *S* GS: You truly humble me... that's what I was striving for... unsure whether I'd managed or not. *S* Thank you so much!! miscellanea: It's good to be here, however short the time... and particularly special to read your kind words... Thank you! *S* luminosity: I've missed me, too, my friend... Need I say more? *S* But I have missed you... and so glad you liked this... thank you!! iliana: If you hadn't made me laugh, my head would be too swollen to get through the door. *G* Thank you so very much!! serenity: I suspect we'd be great companions at battlefields... though we might need someone to drag us out of our trance and home. *S* Thank you so very much! *S* secondhanddreampoet: I know you fell in love with Scotland, too... so I thank you most sincerely for liking this! *S* Owl: Thank you so much, dear lady... I really appreciate your kindness! *S* |

Such a mind blowing piece. It had so many sad parts. It reminds me of the movie "Braveheart". So beautiful this is. Awesome poem!!! Poetry is beauty in words. |
