The Rest Came Easy Six sparrows squabbled over the last of the seed on a grassless patch of earth beneath the feeder several yards from the backdoor through which I watched. It wasn’t as if there was nothing else for them to eat; it was spring for gosh sakes – everything was growing, blooming, reproducing. But six sparrows, like children on a playground arguing over who gets the swings on the end and to heck with the ones in between, or adults jockeying for the parking slot closest to the door in a lot full of empty spaces, squabbled on that bare patch of ground. Turning from the door I went back to the living room, to the chair in which you sat, knelt beside it, looked into your eyes, felt every word of . . . ‘I’m sorry’, and the rest came easy. © wesley james beard, jr april 2007 |

I cannot think of a better analogy than what you've just produced! All wanting the easy way out and not one worthy of walking just for the trip of it! Well done, Sir! |

Good morning, Jim! There are many lessons to be learned through observing the natural world. I am a huge fan of your nature writes! They are compelling ~ and highly compelling! You draw the reader into those vivid vignettes! It is wonderful to be reading your poetry again! You've been missed! Warm, loving hug, Linda |
