An unending work in progress since 2002 after me a two friends hit pine trees repeatedly spinning at about 80mph. I remember feeling lucky After spinning into fear Spinning towards the unknown. Images of floating Mississippi highway Emblazoned on my spine, my mind I will always remember that rain Falling like liquid fire Filling the road with heat Melting our tires Melting our moods, our high I remember feeling lucky After control and comfort Were lost like old friends Sending us into what seemed like Such a slow dead spin My friends fear as strong as mine… Surging, Bracing for pain and death, An unknown urging, Quickly loosing breathe. We were on such a New Orleans high That same damned day. Ready to conquer the world with our minds, State line by state line, Hattiesburg, Mississippi claimed a piece of me that day. I remember feeling lucky After seeing still pine trees, Ready to form a grave. It was suppose to be one of those rides Floating between sleep and surprise Deep discussions abounding The world’s problems sounding. On a steady gas station diet, Talking about the times we had just had, Instead the road steered us where she wished Willing us to her whim Introducing us to her power Dangling us from a limb. Dancing with us on the highway Tired of letting us lead Dodging raindrops, and treetops Our free will had been freed Helping ourselves To a hell Of a view For a few Seconds, the ride wasn't that bad either, If we hadn't seen its end. My mind was shuffled like a deck of cards Everything fighting for priority Rearranging into a reassigned order of importance. Ill never look at a wall of rain the same way again. It was more than an impact that day. It rest with me still. Three friends twisted in time, Slamming into fates hand, Three friends scarred by a wreck, Our ride over --- a rough end. I remember feeling lucky When shock entered my system, Sitting on wet asphalt, Not sure if I was ok. I felt just as the car, That my mind's contents had been strown 50 yards in every direction Covered in broken glass Resting on the side of highway I-59 Waiting for rescue workers to come pick them up And put them where they go. I remember feeling lucky After spinning into fear. Jak |
