she walked onto the stage like any other human being tall commanding sat on a stool I drank her from my third row seat lips opened when it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore god put a rainbow in the clouds sang itself powerful the world fell away and she taught me I laid back in her voice it held me as a mother holds a beloved babe cadence nourishing me that voice told of tiny brown children tags tied to their arms shipped to a grandmother old oft told story uncle tucked quickly quietly under potatoes and onions nights when the men rode horse hooves pounding oh and the fear tingling like tiny spiders crawling on arms neck backs when it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore god put a rainbow in the clouds her slow pulse spoke dancing naked under palm trees brown skinned glory poetry her native language teaching her heart I was eight she growled and that baltimorean called me nigg… uh uh… fingers covered her mouth adjusted her ancient mask and still that voice when it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore god put a rainbow in the clouds she came here from winston –salem a good step to teach me something she said and she meant to do it she worked me hard that night held me in her grasp her voice reached for my face turned me said be a rainbow searching for knowledge uplift courage and find it all at the end when it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore god put a rainbow in the clouds |

I am another long time fan of Maya Angelou, from way back when I read, I know Why The Caged Bird Sings! I was thrilled when she read Good Morning. Thank you for your beautiful words and sharing that visit to see her in person. Martyjo |

Thank you for sharing the experience, Kate. I wish I could have had such... Incidentaly, few may know, that the title "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", unless, perhaps they've read the book, is from a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, "Sympathy". http://www.dunbarsite.org/gallery/Sympathy.asp CG |

A remarkable tribute to a fearless, peerless woman. You captured her dignity--you do know that, right? smiling I heard her voice through yours. |
