This poem is dedicated to my good friend Harry—survivor, gentleman, soldier (Harry was stationed at Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor) His tour of duty ended on December 06, 1941, a Saturday. While waiting for a plane to the mainland to begin his new life as a civilian, Pearl Harbor was attacked, and the rest is history… mustered out on december sixth waiting for a mainland plane girl at home waiting alone for the boy becoming a man sunday morn was quite disturbed by zeroes flight in homeland calm rapiers of the rising sun bared their swords, emptied sheaths and hickam dissolved into the scrap yard of a nation’s hopes and dreams while flyers watched as flying machines were strewn upon the ground chaos filled the air, the sea, the land as manhood strapped his skinny chest with armor from within and courage welled like sea crest waves for the boy becoming a man… |
