Depth of Understanding

Look upon me with softer eyes than jagged heart
though I anchored dreams in wakes
no chance for them to fly-
I could sleep for decades and only start
easing the freezing pain of this goodbye.

It's you (or absence of) as the day slips and breaks
the night was heavy on me
breathing bare dark air thin-
it was time that revealed these our mistakes
if I'd the chance to do it all again.

I'd not cast these anchors into the raging sea
where I sank a thousand leagues
no more air, naught to say
freedom is my responsibility
look softly on me as I break away.
