The Wreckers

Light false beacons, lure ships in,
to flounder on 'our' shore.
Kill all survivors, loot the wreck,
this night should bring us more.

The depth that man can stoop when pressed,
survival calls the tune.
Their shame and dignity oppressed,
those nights without a moon.

They prayed in church, for help to bring,
ships close each storm swept night.
For wreckers thought that only God,
brought ships to ease their plight.

They also prayed to save all souls,
that sailed upon the sea,
Except the ones, too near 'our' coast,
their loss will set 'us' free.

Then they helped God, by lighting fires,
false lights to guide ships in.
They fed their families on their crimes,
but sold their souls to sin.

One of my favorite books is "Jamaica Inn" by Daphne Du Maurier. Your poem reminds me of that story and is wonderful.

Ivor, my friend this is absolutely magnificent!! It has a real sense of atmosphere! I could almost smell the fog rolling in and see the lanterns glowing in the gloom! It's a mighty work and it captures the essence perfectly.

I wonder how many will "pass the test of faith" when our time comes, or when faced with true adversity...or will greed rule the day. So far...mine is holding fast!

This was brilliant my friend...I could almost see peg leg pete standing in the hold itemizing his treasures!

this was amazing, brought me to the New Jersey Coast again...and it's bout that time of year...not to mention, the emotions in this which brought me to a realistic stop....

Thank you for accompanying me on this journey into the past. A modern day equivalent has just happened her in England, although the ship was not lured onto the rocks (I hope)...

Here we are remembering those who died off a rig near NFLD...it is sad to hear but sometimes we put ourselves at that risk
