<#3> McGregor's Cabin The ghost town bakes beneath the sun. The cabin's weathered, lizards run Before my footsteps in the sand. I look around. From where I stand, Upon a hill nearby I see, An open door move stealthily. It sends a frisson up my spine. I wonder if it is a sign That restless spirits linger still And haunt that place upon the hill? There is no sound, a vagrant breeze Could move old, wooden doors like these. But I can feel no moving air Nor see that there is wind up there. Then I decide that I'll be bold. I'll climb that hill and take a hold Of silly flights of fancy, so, I'll know for sure before I go. There is no one around but me. Perhaps some animal may be Inside the house, where shelter may Provide some respite from the day. But when I step up to the door, There's only emptiness, no more. No footsteps on the threshold show. There is something in here though. A mournful presence I can sense. I feel myself grow cold and tense. But no hostility's made known. No rattling chains, no plaintive moan. But I leave quickly just the same. I know McGregor was his name! Betty Lou Hebert |

Hi Sunshine: Thanks for commenting. I lived in a ghost town in Nevada for 5 years and after my initial experience in McGregor's cabin, we all called it that. Trillium Betty Lou Hebert |

I've enjoyed your poetry...have always found it motivating and interesting...it stimulates me to reminisce...humm, helps me relax and think about the past and wonder about the future...enjoyed "McGregor's Cabin"...it took me back to a wilderness and Heitkemper's cabin off County Road 315...just a little bit beyond Chamois, Missouri...and the villages of Freedom, Useful and Frankenstein...humm, believe I'm getting old and I miss The Land WOOO. |

Dear Betty Lou Old abandon buildings do seem to have a life of their own. Your poem brought back distant memories of mine. I remember when I was a teenager I had to walk through bush land and pass a very old abandoned house on my way to the high school I was attending. The window panes were all but gone and the doors were unhinged. I felt eyes upon me and my hairs on my arms would stand on end. Needless to say, my heart would race and my pace quickened. Verbena: Thanks for reading and I understand your feelings when passing the abandoned house. Buildings like that do seem to have a "presence" of their own. Trillium Betty Lou Hebert |
