When Winter Came

When winter came and froze the pond,
My family was very fond
Of donning skates and venturing
Out on the ice and we would bring
Some lanterns, we could later light,
So we could skate into the night.
Sometimes the neighbors would come by.
We’d have such fun, the time would fly.
We’d end up playing “crack-the-whip”.
If you were at the very tip,
You usually lost the holding hand
To fly across the ice and land
Upon the banks of snow that lay
Along the edges.There you’d stay
To catch your breath and watch the scene,
Not dreaming then what it would mean
In later years when you were grown
And had a family of your own.
When we were finished, we would go
Into the house for hot cocoa
And how we’d cup our hands around
The heated mugs. The toast was browned
To just the right degree of tan,
While sizzling bacon in a pan
Sent its aroma everywhere
Throughout the rooms and we would share
A time of camaraderie.
That memory is dear to me!

And to me!  My family would flood the back yard in the winter to make a skating rink, and those were some very fond memories you dredged up for me.  I miss those good old days.  Goodness, I am sounding just like my mother now.

Loved this romp down memory lane.

Dear Mysteria:  I was looking out at the ice and snow here and suddenly remembered what is was like when I was young and we used to skate on the pond at my aunt's farm.
It was FUN!  Wish I still felt that way about it!!

A lovely memory Betty.  In my memory of winters when I was a child there was just too much snow to have a skating pond.  It would be covered too soon. Glad you have such beautiful memories.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:

There were years when we couldn't have a skating pond because of heavy snow. I can remember my dad and uncle climbing out of the upstairs windows of the farmhouse to tunnel down to the doors, so they could also tnnel out to the barn to feed the animals.

Dear Betty Lou

The closest thing I've ever come to ice is hail stones.  Our winters here in Australia are very mild compared to yours. I'd love to see snow falling from the sky, build a snowman and watch people skate on frozen lakes.

Love Verbena xo

Betty Lou,

You create magic with your poetry, at least for me.  I love this beyond mere words in a comment box.

Thank you for writing and sharing.
