Country Dance

Among the farms, the word went out.
A rider carried it about.
A neighbor's house was set to be
The scene of great frivolity.
An all night dance, just two days hence,
Was when the frolic would commence.
Each housewife planned what she would take.
Then some made pies and some make cake.
Firm plans were set for early chores.
Best clothing soon hung out of doors
To air it out before the day,
For in a cedar chest it lay.

The day arrived and evening found
So many wagons party bound.
The lighted house, a welcome sight.
Then fiddle music filled the night.
The wraps were laid upon a bed.
Some babies nestled at the head.
The dresser drawers could hold a few
Who were quite small and very new.
The older girls took turns to see
The other children wouldn't be
A hindrance to their parent's fun.
By now, the dancing had begun.

A midnight supper soon was served,
For the musicians all deserved
A lengthy rest. The food was great!
They gave their thanks before they ate.
The dancing then resumed once more,
But everyone was through by four.
The dishes done, they said good-bye,
While daylight crept into the sky.
Each wagon bed was full of hay
Where drowsy-headed children lay
To listen to the rising song
Of birds, who seemed to fly along.
While overhead the clouds would show
Pale colors from the morning's glow.

This is so nostalgic.  Mom used to tell me about these occasions.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  I was pretty young but I still remember the last ones we went to. It was lots of fun for everyone and one of the rare occasions when all the outlying farm people could get together.

I hope you are keeping safe and also dry!

Love

a flashback to pioneer days!  this is a stunning piece of story telling in rhyme.  Bravo!

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  Thanks so much!  My parents homesteaded in northern Alberta for 6 or 7 years.  This is a faded memory of those times.

BettyLou~
You stir nostalgia with a new word-brush~

I wish .. I wish .. that these gatherings still took place~

But ... I want you to know this ...

'The dresser drawers could hold a few
Who were quite small and very new.'

I couldn't help but be reminded of the tale my mother told me of when I was born ... she thought a bed for one so small just wasn't right ... so she placed me in a dresser drawer~
Honest Injun !!!

Thank you for this little lullabye memory from my past~

Dear Marge:  Thanks!  I too spent my first few months in a dresser drawer!  My parents were homesteaders and there was no money for a cradle, or baby crib.  Sure didn't bother me any!

Ronnie says to tell you "Hi" and sends his love.
