A Precious Day

The ancient hills in beauty stand,
Above this vast and lonely land.
Against a sky of flawless blue,
A soaring eagle scans the view.
The sign of man, a dusty trail
Winding through the sage and shale.
No sound of man assaults the air.
Only silence everywhere.
Down from the heights on a wintry day,
The frost god flings his jewels away.
Diamonds lying on the snow
In icy splendor, their beauty show.
Up from the desert, flushed with light,
A thousand wings flash, silver bright,
As small birds rise in disarray
To greet another precious day!

You bring the cold, clear, austere yet blessed land very well here, thank you.

I imagine the flock of birds rising from below a subtle crest, catching sunlight over the snow... A thousand wings is 500 birds, right? Quite a cool season's flock! Very good imagery throughout this work.

easy1:  Thanks for reading this poem. Perhaps "a thousand wings" is a bit of an exageration but at the moment, it seemed like there must be that many. It was in the Nevada Black Rock Desert and with no other sounds around, was quite an impressive flight!
