Halloween Onions It's Halloween and daddy dear Is getting ready, I can hear The rustle of the paper bags, With their little pumpkin tags, Wishing each child happiness. It is his way to express The fun this is to him I guess. The children come, he passes out Each little bag and with a shout Sends them on their merry way, Then laughs so hard, I cannot say Why it is he thinks this funny. But he always has been sunny! It took awhile before I found Why he makes this happy sound! It turned out there was no candy, So he used what he found handy. A great big sack of onions that In a pantry corner sat, Was the source of all his glee! He even gave a few to me! Betty Lou Hebert |

That's a good one! We once had a whacky neighbor, who claimed my children were special. On Halloween she gave each one a rotten apple. I told another neighbor so she, too could have a laugh. She said my kids were special, hers only got a half of a rotten apple. We all had a great laugh for many years. Happy autumn. God bless, Rae |

Mysteria: My dad loved to play harmless tricks on people, although I don't know how harmless some of the children thought it was when they discovered what was in their bag! We have all laughed about it over the years. Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Hmmm... After reading this I am remembering long-past Halloweens, from back in more widely trusting days. And here it is still July... Onions as gag gifts for any occasion seem, if not ubiquitous, then at least a rather common phenomenon. With Halloween it is after all "Trick or Treat!" The kids' parents might've gotten a chuckle out of that... Pumpkins really do look a little bit like big, orange onions, I guess. |

easy1: Thanks for reading. I grew up in Canada and all we ever got in our Halloween bags was apples. To get even one onion was not okay! We even called for "halloween apples" at the houses! Quite different from today. Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

I know you posted this awhile back, but I must say it is very well developed, and I love the way the surprise builds. Very cool story turned into a poem. This gives me a better idea of what a poem can be. I always loved Halloween as a child. You brought back good memories. Thank you. Best Regards, Novus_Os |
