The Barn

The barn, though old and faded now,
Once harbored hordes of horse and cow
And cats of every size and hue,
All found a home inside it too,
For there they hunted through the day
For mice that lived within the hay
That filled the loft. The pigeons flew
Up to the rafters where they'd coo
And strut about. The space up there
Was full of dust motes in the air,
That made it look so far away
From the mound on which I lay.
I'd go into a kind of trance,
Until the window caught my glance
And I would see the light had gone.
That evening was coming on.
The animals would soon be heard
With now and then, a muted word,
From men who herded them on in.
The barn would fill with dust and din.
They all were fed and milking pails
Were taken down.The flailing tails
Were tied aside and milk would flow
To fill receptacles below.

The cats would come and sit and meow
Behind the stall of every cow.
They always got a pan or two
And now and then, a cow would moo,
While from my lofty nest I'd spy
On all the cozy scene and try
To be as quiet as a mouse,
Until a call from near the house
Would tell me mother looked for me
To come and help with cookery
So I'd go in to chop and stir.
Another pair of hands for her.
Before I'd go to bed, I'd stand
Out on the porch to smell the land.
An olio of scents that meant
All was well in my firmament.
The massive barn in silence stood.
A farmland palace, made of wood!

This brought back memories.  I see my daddy and brothers balanced on three legged stools as I wondered at the stream of milk they produced from those placid cows.  Great writing .  Love, Joyce

Oh, I love how you took me to that barn with you and let me hear the animals and sounds.  I could smell the hay and see the dusk through the window.

And then you taught me a new word!  Olio.  I had never heard of it before.

Thank you, dear Betty Lou.

Hugs and kisses,
Alison

I seem to forget to come to this site to read. However when I do remember,  I find you and have never found you lacking. I love the farm scene. You brought me back to a place in Delaware years ago when I visited my cousin's farm. latearrival

Thank you for your nice remarks. I'm glad this poem brought you pleasant memories. It did for me too!  I spent lots of days on an aunt's farm in Alberta.
