By Wind and Water

Once, long ago, I lived above
The western sea I'd come to love.
I'd only step outside the door
And I could hear the breakers roar.
Smell the salty wind and hear
Sea bird song call to my ear.
The cliff across the bay was where
They had a rookery and there
The birds were ever actively
Flying in or out, to sea.
The constant din was muted so
It didn't bother, but I know
The closer that you came, it grew
Until it overpowered you!

How many thousands nested there
I couldn't guess, but everywhere
You looked, you saw some type of bird,
Determined his voice should be heard!
I'd walk the other way when I
Went to the beach, but there on high
I'd always see a wheeling mass,
Peer down at me as I would pass.
I went back there the other day,
After a lengthy time away.
The cliff is gone! The ocean's power
Wore away that nesting tower.
It's hard to believe what change appears
By wind and water, over years!

Betty Lou,

I am always in awe of nature and how she recaptures - or simply takes - what she wants.  I hope the birds found a new home and are enjoying peering down at someone else.

Thank you for sharing the view from the window of your memory.  It's lovely to see and feel.

Dear Alison:

There always seems to be another cliff along the coast that will make a rookery, if only for a few years. There is certainly no shortage of birds!  Thanks for commenting.

Nature always does have a way of making changes to the most solid appearing places.  Fantastic imagery yet again.

Thank you for sharing it with us all

Hope Fleeting:  Thanks!  Even being aware of the power of the ocean and nature itself, I was shocked when I re-visited some of my favorite spots on the coast so many years later.

About 10 years ago here in London Ontario, there was a gathering of Crows, so immense that every tree for about a square mile was totally covered with these squawking black monsters. They stayed all summer and luckily never returned the following year.

the intensity of your words brought this all back to mind
~
very nicely done

Hi Rex Allen:

Thanks for reading my poem and commenting. I have friends in Ontario, in Dunnsville, but haven't been to that part of Canada. I grew up in Alberta. I can remember huge flocks of crows that hung around the farm,
where there always was something for them to eat!

Nicely done and a great subject. Living in Florida, we do not have the cliffs for the birds to nest. I've often wondered where the gulls go to nest. There is quite an abundance of them. Thanks for sharing this.

Sky:

Thanks for reading.  I have always wanted to visit Florida but haven't made it yet. I have some friends there, so maybe I'll make it yet!
