Going, Going, Gone

Though once it was an everyday thing,
How long since you've seen a ball of string?
A piece of it pulled from a cone in a store
Would be carried home to use one time more.
Mama would roll it into a big ball.
For a myriad of uses, it was always on call.

Just today I looked for a piece of string
To tie up a plant that would droop and swing.
Not a single piece in the entire house.
I had to tear strips from a worn out blouse.
Balls of string were hoarded by folks who were smart
And foresaw string famine right from the start.
We, the improvident, will never more see them;
Excepting perhaps in a fine arts museum.

Dear Joyce:  I think string savers are a thing of the past. You never get string anymore in any of the stores.  I hunted all over for a piece a few days ago and ended up using a rubber band. Later, out in my husband's shop I spied a huge roll of string. He obviously didn't want me to know about it. Probably one of the last of his kind!

My husband had a big roll of binder twine.  When I asked him for a piece he would measure it out carefully, so as not to give me too much.  He must have known it would soon be a thing of the past.  Love, joyce

What a wonderful little moment.

I just hate it when I can't find a pieces of string (or tape) that I know should be in the stuff drawer...
