Facts of Life

I saw an eagle, hawk and heron
As I drove to town today.
Each sat in calm aloofness
With a watchful eye for prey.

I'm glad I'm not a bunny,
A small bird or a mouse,
For with such predators about
I'd dare not leave my house.

If I were a frog or fish I would
Sit still with eyes closed tight
Knowing that big heron could
Devour me with one bite.

My Lord gave me dominion
Over land and beast and fowl
And made me big enough I can't
Be picked off by an owl.

I find living to be tolerable,
Quite peaceful and serene,
But many smaller beings know
That nature can be mean.

So next time I feel like crying
And grumbling at my fate
I'll rememember smaller creatures
Who would think my life is great.

"Survival of the Fittest" is
The rule by which they live.
Dying is the price of living,
They accept it and forgive.

"facts of life"...very stimulating poem, joyce...it left me with the thought concerning a fact of life...death is the price one pays for living.

four years ago i hatched six chickens. thought i had five hens and a rooster. over a period of time, i came to realize, there were four roosters and two hens.

critters would come and take the dominant rooster away. when this happened, the secondary sex traits would develop and a new dominate rooster would rule the roost.

when the situation worked its way down the ladder to the two hens, a critter took the smallest hen. all that remains of the original six is a large rhode island black and her name is hennie hen.

originally, i was upset and wanted to kill the the critters but have decided to co-exist with them and i am, now, the dominate rooster protecting hennie hen. for my efforts, she pays me with an egg a day!

Thanks for the nice words Friends.
Wooo, I liked your story.  I have tried to raise Bantys just to allow them to march around the farm yard but they always succumb to the predators.  We had one little chick that survived when all of his siblings and his mother were snatched. We named him Super Chick. He grew up to be the dominant rooster and soon my only rooster protecting a few hens.  My daughter drove in one day in time to see the neighbor's dog attack and kill him as he fought back valiantly.  That was an act of cruelty and I resented it as the dog was not fighting for existence.  After I lost the last hen I have given up on chickens. joyce, had a similar experience with bantys...started with twenty and lost them all to critters in a single week. will never try them again and when hennie hen is gone i'll get all my eggs from the grocery store.
