On Christmas Eve
I sat in church
Singing Christmas carols
Having communion
Lighting candles
Communing with my Lord
As each candles was being lit
From one candle to another
I heard God’s voice from within say
Don’t preach it
Just live it
When someone sees the constant burning
Radiance and faith you have in your life
There will be no need to preach it
Just live it
Those who are watching and searching for
Guidance in their lives
They will begin to follow the light
Questioning your peacefulness, inquiring about
The enduring stability in your life
Then you can tell them about the one
You walk with, the one who holds your hand
The one who listens to all your cares
The one who gives meaning to your life

The words you speak then will be the words
That they are ready to hear

Later after leaving the church
A young lady who had not reached
That point of need
Told me about an experience she had that day
While sitting in a restaurant
Enjoying her meal
When two very young men approached her
Asking questions about her aloneness and spiritual searching
Assuming she was lost and needed them to point her to their God
Their own personal religious beliefs
In unintentional ignorance they invaded her privacy
Assuming she was not happy with her life
Had no direction
Needed their intervention
Their words bounced off the table
Landing on the floor
Spoiling a young women’s solitude
Perhaps making her miss hearing the still small voice

Songbird,

I enjoyed reading the poem and hearing your thoughts on this topic.  I particularly liked the refrain you had going in the beginning of the poem,

My one comment /critique might be that this almost felt like two poems put together.  You may want to consider taking the second half and letting it stand alone.  I think it would gain much more power that way.

I agree Songbird.  It is always better to show by your actions than to preach with words.  Nice work.  Joyce
