                To the Veteran

A veteran of deception
is what one longs to be!
To sail the mind,
in a realm of rhyme,
as an escape through fantasy.

What be the lesson learned,
as we travel to some distant place,
if the world we share,
lies gutted and bare
in the shallow grave of reality?

I think perhaps we all use our poetry as an escape.  I know I can't change the world so I do what I can and retreat into my safe little nest and scribble away.  Love, Joyce

to a degree, i think i'm inclined to agree with you, joyce. poetry can be an escape. the world around us sometimes becomes too heavy to shoulder, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and even socially. all of these aspects are like puzzles with pieces missing. direct experience is often a noncompassionate teacher but in a forum such as corner pub#3, one can remain on the backside of the mirror and still reflect through their poetry. in doing so they gain experience vicariously and are able to learn in a less frightening way. such be case of the young "seeker 72", "nv sailor" and "angel 101" whom i believe are "birds of the same feather" and were the inspiration for this poem!

joyce, glance back into the past. i disagree! you do make a difference. you do change the world. the earth lies within an immediate universe that surrounds all humanity as we know it but within each of us there is an idioverse. the energy that you share through your poetry impacts on every life it touches! my life has been spent as a toad in a "rose garden" and believe me when i say, you are not the "toad" but instead you are a loving "rose"!

not sure I agree yet that all is so dark and grimy that we escape into the written world to avoid getting dirty. I embrace the dark side as well as the light in my writing. After all, isn't the world in reality both light & shade?

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus, sometimes i get the feeling i'm not communicating well. the poem "to the veteran" was, specifically, directed to n v sailer and his reference, to himself, as a "veteran" in his comments relating to his poem "unentitled drunken poem". he did not specify but implied he was a "military veteran". i had difficulty envisioning him as such but saw him, as an adolescent, hiding behind a two-way mirror...deceptively searching... which is ok with me but resulted in my response poem..." to the veteran".

Don't shoot the messanger popped into my head after reading this. We as poets just speak our version of the truth, no matter how convoluted it may be. The beauty is it is up to the reader, and humanity as a result, to decide what it means to them and apply meaning. Great write!
