This Wilderness

This wilderness that stretches far
To the north, from where we are,
Is only lightly touched by man,
For when the westward move began,
There were no roads, which slowed the pace
Of people in eternal race
To find a spot to settle down
And build a village or a town.
~
The loggers and the miners went
Into the hills and forests, bent,
On finding riches of their kind,
But very soon, they left behind
Their dreams of wealth to seek a way
To make life better every day,
Without the constant need to be
Close to friends and family.
~
Life then was hard, there is no doubt.
On foot or horseback, they went out
Into the wilds, far from their own
And had to make their way alone.
Today, there are some settled spots,
But they are little more than dots
Upon the vast, untamed domain
That to these very times, remain!

yes, can understand the feeling in the poem...in my mind it is a quest for freedom...internal freedom from external chaos! loved my time, some years ago, in the flathead valley, the "bob" and south eastern british columbia. brings back memories of detoted.

Dear Joyce:

Having recently made a small excursion into pretty wild country, it makes me wonder how long it is doing to remain untouched. So many inroads into it already.

Thanks for reading.
