Futility of Protection I carried my house upon my back Someone tipped me over My feet pointed upward I had to lay there waiting Until someone kind Set me upright Or an enemy slew me I wore so much armor I was handicapped The weight of it Confined me What use was the armor? It only made me a “sitting duck” Afraid to get wet Walking in the rain I stayed inside my house Avoiding the sunshine |

Poor turtle. My son stopped his car to turn one over and it bit him. Poor son. Love, Joyce |

interesting...without songbird ever naming the creature, we all thought of the turtle. including, the old biologist, wooo...but on second thought, me thinks it was a tortoise! i have picked up many a tortoise or box turtles in my day. many times taking them to my "safe haven" in the wilderness. it was my futile attempt to protect them from the problems of urbanization. by doing so i'm sure i've had an impact on the tortoise "gene pool" in the surrounding area. songbird, you have a beautiful voice and i enjoyed your technique of not exposing the creature by name...very good! |

Thanks for the comments, this poem however goes deeper than the surface, it is about how sometimes we feel like protecting ourselves so much we miss the good things that could be coming to our life. I wrote it from that perspective. Self protection can be futile, it is never absolute, sometime it does more harm, then putting our faith in God and his destiny for us. |
