The Aerialist One of the strongest things on earth Has not been noted for its girth! Rhinoceros and elephant Though powerful, they simply can't Match forces with the hummingbird. I know that really sounds absurd But with a heart that for their size Is larger, makes us realize What strength it takes to flex those wings And to maneuver in the springs To reach the places where they stay Until the summer fades away. They'll fly non-stop for twenty hours, Five hundred miles, to reach the flowers They somehow know are waiting there For them to come and get their share Of the nectar they desire. It's fuel for their inner fire. That keeps them active and competing For they need to keep on eating More than their body weight each day To launch their aerial display! Their colors dazzle us and we Keep watch for them, most eagerly! Betty Lou Hebert |

Haven't really seen one, but from your poem I can almost imagine how majestic and beautiful these birds must be. |

Lovely Betty. I'll be watching for my first glimpse soon of one of these beauties. I just got home from a trip to California and then two days at state board in Seattle. I'm weary but I had to check out this corner. Love, Joyce |

jjote: The hummingbirds are very small birds, but they have incredible stamina for their size. They are only found in North and South America. Their colors are magnificence in a tiny package! We have lots of them here starting in April and lasting until September. Betty Lou |

BettyLou~ 'aerialists' they are for sure~ I LOVE reading your thoughts of them~ Here they have returned to gift me with many hours of just sitting and enjoying them~ There is one particular hanging plant on my patio that they just LOVE hovering around .. it is the Burrow's Tail that is abloom with the tiny pink flowers ... it summons them to come .... and they do~ *Huglets* ![]() ~*Marge*~ ~*The sound of a kiss is not as strong as that of a cannon, but it's echo endures much longer*~ |

Dear Marge: Thanks!! I'm sure you have far moe hummingbirds than we do, being in such a lush growing area and with all your warm weather. We only have five varieties who call here but we do get lots of them The most colorful is the Rufous and he is gorgeous! Then we get the Calliope, Anna's, Black Chinned and Broad Tailed. We enjoy them all and have feeders set up for them front and back. They do take advantage of the flowers too, when it is the blooming season. Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |
