Please don't compliment me on this poem. This was written for a woman who did the costumes for all the plays at my school. She collapsed last night and died in hospital. How could this come upon us? The tragedy is clear Where is the joyous chorus? Why is our friend not here? Your passion was a beacon Your art a kind of light Your life an endless legacy Your kindness ever bright Where do the smiles come from? When the actors are bereaved Are they masks or faces? Has not the music grieved? Always an empty canvass Which you always helped to fill Always a busy kindness Another gesture of good will Wish we knew you better Wish again to call you friend Always call you mentor Never knew that it could end Where do the smiles come from? When the actors are bereaved Are they masks or faces? Has not the music grieved? Let this be your legacy The smiles as they leave Let them not see the actors Nor the music greave For you are with the angels Of that I have no doubt Yet all of us now wonder How we’ll ever do without Where do the smiles come from? When the actors are bereaved Are they masks or faces? Has not the music grieved? My melancholy is purely my own |
