Misery Misery; that hard metal coiled cruelly Expanding when the heat of your thoughts Enters upon the threshold of hurt But repressed in the chill of rejection There was never an emotion that brought So much hurt as this has to mankind A burden that most go through Much more than petty anxiety The dragging of a heart Through the briar patch of life It comes out with thorns that leave scars Sometimes they hurt too much to pull out Like a deadly disease that few overcome Misery rings in the blood Calling up a pain of the physical kind Where few relish in its advance Misery isn’t happiness Though it often substitutes Filling the meter of happiness With its own sick designs "I thought I'd just mention in passing . . .
