Dark Lament I would be away under protection of the night; but I stay, in fear of stars. It’s hot here, and the rats itch my outer skin. They have taken to sharpening their teeth on me, but I don’t move. If I frighten them, they scurry about and stir up the powder dust. It reminds me, when I don’t sneeze, and the panic grabs me again. I would be away before the dawn, but I have lost the measure of time now I have no heart to beat my hours; and I might be caught in sky-glare, to my great detriment. There are insects here, many-legged crawlers. All my life I hated them, and they taste no better now. I would be away, but I remain. Don’t laugh at me. You don’t know what your tomorrows bring. I didn’t. Nan (Pilgrim variety) |

I once new a women, she was slowly dying in the worst kind of way. Every day she breathed, hope was in each exahlation, that the future might be better. Crawl out from under, the rats still bite, but they run in the light. |

Yo dear Nan, Nice to see you again. This is an interesting poem, with an interesting outlook. Look on the bright side, and you'll feel much better. It's Sunday. Stay away from those centipedes, they're not insects anyway. Love Bobby |

Hi pilgrimage, I like a good riddle and this is one. I don't know what you are, inanimate, or more likely deceased I suspect. At first I thought you were jumping through time in error, but "I have lost the measure of time" tells me it is intentional. The last line confuses me, for all living things "tomorrow" can only bring death. This further enforces the thought that you may be referring to the grave. Turtle |
