Battlefield Verdun

Viewing the Verdun battlefield
that is before my eyes
I think of the soldiers
that fought and died,
no man wanting to lose his life
to bombs and bullets
to war and strife.
Two World Wars
have come and gone,
scarring the soil
with blood and bones,
from the bombs and guns.
I pass warning signs
and I walk in
to find rusty helmits
and canteens, and I
get chicken skin,
for just below the surface
danger lurks, for should
old ordinance explode
it can still mame and hurt.
Experts say it could take
up to 800 years
to remove the ordinance
that still remains here.
