Seagulls soaring over white water wings stiff in the black sky storm clouds race the raging winds as breaking seas go by white water surging from astern thrusting bows deep down drowning the bare-breasted figure-head shroud covered sails, dripping touching the dark green sea a barnacled weed covered hull broaching as the mast breaks free flotsam washed up on the cold grey sands no last post played no home coming, no welcome band. |

Well done, dear Johan! There are so many who have had this sad destiny. But their souls soar free above with the seagulls, I believe ... Love, Margherita |

You know, in the US many people are caught up in the television show "The Deadliest Catch" - it is about fishermen in the Bering Sea off the Aleutian Chain of Alaska. Sometimes when we see too much on tv, we grow complacent about real life dangers. In Homer, Alaska there is a Harvester Memorial on Homer Spit. It is a statue of a mariner under a small shelter. Those who are lost at sea are named in within the walls surrounding the sailor. Some are people in my memories - so, for those mariners who never come home, I thank you for this poem. Alison |
