A child searched for the perfect gift
Soft cream and lavender appealed
Ignoring pain from the stickers
She picked some thistles from the field

Sucking the blood from pricked fingers
She soon gathered a huge bouquet
And proudly delivered her gift
With her wish – “Happy Mother’s Day!”

She thought her present beautiful
But to her dismay and surprise
The recipient was incensed –
The flowers were thrown out and despised

“So that’s how you feel!” was the shout
“You’re giving me these thorny weeds
This garbage you’ve just dumped on me
Is the last thing anyone needs!”

No one bothered to consider
That the gift was more than the flowers
The child felt her love rejected
And she cried for hours upon hours

She grew up, as little girls do
And vowed that she would be real tough
And never let on how it hurt
Knowing her love was not enough

But lonely’s lousy companion
She allowed herself to pretend
Someone would see she had value
And solitude would at last end

She gave her heart to a good man
Hoping he’d heal the hurt of years
But he perceived no beauty in
Thistles, well-watered with her tears

So she’s again left wondering
What’s reason for being on earth
When all she is and can offer
Is still completely lacking worth

(((((((Ruth)))))) this is incredibly heartwrenching and if this has happened to you, I can't begin to imagine how this really made you feel. Besides, in my eyes, thistles are beautiful.

This poem is masterfully written!

It's not others that establish our worth, remember! You are a precious diamond, you sparkle beautifully on YOUR OWN.

Love and hugs.
Margherita

ps thistles brought back a memory from a school excursion when in a hostel in the Swiss Alps we put thistles into the boys' beds and then like devils enjoyed their screams ....

suthern....
Heart wrenching and well done. Some people never realize how sensitive children are.

Beautifully crafted, Milady, and an explicit cautionary tale that we should always engage brain before opening mouth.

Beloved one, Just sometimes I wonder why I continue to write and then I read something you’ve written and realize that I want so much to write even half as well as you do. This was crafted with care, and just as it was crafted it speaks with authenticity. (Darling one I am getting to be an expert on authenticity, it is a Philosophers touchstone) Not that I’m a qualified Philosopher, I haven’t got the beard or the pipe, but .. anyway I digress, this is truly beautiful, as you are beloved one. Some people shine with an inner light, and YOUR inner light shines brightly always.

Love your writing lady, YOU ROCK
Love you always
Forget you NEVER

Tomorrow is another day I don't know what it holds
but I can face the future with courage brave and bold

Yann, Margherita, Rex, Kaoru and Windhove: Thank you so much for your wonderful responses... I appreciate each and every one of you so very much!!!

Marsha: I love you to bits, sweet lady... and thank you sincerely... even if you are a fraud saying you want to write half as well as me when you already leave me in your dust. *G*

Soemtimes those harsh and uncaring words have a lasting impact,
and that is the worst kind of scar to bare.

You did good suthern gal.

I want to believe that she placed those thistles in a vase,
and that they are a unique and beautiful bouquet
when arranged in the soft light.

That's what I think!

Yo Dear Suthern,

That’s too bad.

We don’t have thistles in the city, but we can still feel rejection.

Love Bobby

This is so sad. I think thistles are beautiful in their own way, especially If given by a child. This is a story all parents should read.

I have often seen the beauty in thistles. They were just given to the wrong person. Not worthless at all! love ya, latearrival

Being one of the 'odd ones' I happen to like thistles! Birds need them as a food source, and they are an inherently beautiful color of purple in all their protective thorniness. That any mother would reject a treasure from the heart of her child is incredibly sad.
MHO, it's the rejecting mother who was the true thorn in this story.

To reject anything a child gives is a "sin" but how like life to place the "shame" on the child.  Most touching and sad write.

I taught my little boy to pick every dandylion in our yard he could find, and give them to his mommy because she loves them,
She always responds with a thankyou and he gets a kiss.
He hasn't figured out yet that he is weeding the yard for me.
Funny how we can teach the young.
