She was as cold as steel in the morning and hot as asphalt in an August sun. She was Danny's first kiss, hot pants and freckles, braces and tan lines, Hawaiian Tropic and second base on prom night. She was Bobbie McGee, Layla, Proud Mary and Jumpin Jack Flash, Strawberry Wine, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Purple Haze and ten dollars an ounce. She was best friends and lost loves, skinny dipping and flowers in her hair, muscle cars barking mating calls, Kim's bikini and swapping lies. She was half way home, a place to start, making plans and looking back, standing still, ready to run and late for chores. And as I stood there waving my arms and pointing into the empty air where an old iron bridge once stood... My son was texting a message to a friend of his. (My Dad is pretty lame) I should have waited to tell him this story after he had crossed a few bridges of his own. [This message has been edited by critical mass (04-17-2009 04:11 AM).] |

I had a place like this, but it was just a few trees, in the middle of town. They had to cut them down. Some disease...my youth died with those trees... but the memories will always be. thanks for the reminder |

That put an arm around my shoulder and said: "Where you been dad"? Not far....just another world away son |

Wow, every single line is pure poetic memory for me. This was a trip I thouroughly enjoyed taking. Our kids will one day have kids of their own and they'll get the 'lame' treatment too. |

I loved this... the memories it evoked, the chagrin of being considered lame... and the knowledge that his memories will one day be just as compelling. *S* Great write! *S* |
