As the dripping pink sun hides in nothingness, an elderly man sits poised on a dark oak bench. Blue smoke leaves his nostrils, a tight-rolled Padron protrudes from his tobacco stained lips. Green eyes stab the exhaled burning asphalt, searching for the former generation of workers. His black fedora lies on a steady head, frozen in perfection – forgotten in silence His spine twisted from years in the mines. Coughing blood into a white handkerchief. His black tie and trench coat twitch in the summer breeze of the city. Graffiti murals sink into brick walls of liquor stores. Punkers with high-hawked hair Chains extend from their noses. Skateboarders carve cement Swerving in and out of raging flooded streets. Horns roar and tires squeal Big headed raspy voices scream infuriated gibberish. Children eat Sicilian pizza Aimlessly wandering while holding their parents’ hands Yellow, black and white checkered Taxis flash by to the North Side. A bum snores in front of a Pakistani Restaurant with a bottle of warm beer, hidden in wrinkled brown paper. A man with a leather jacket and baseball cap is selling paintings on the side street. Carts stink of hotdogs, chili, onions, mustard, and garlic. “Foot-longs,” he calls out. Steam escapes from nearby sewers. Chattering wet rats underground. Tangled leashes wrap around an old woman’s arm as she chases yapping mutts. Limousines cruise through the melting tarred street to formal engagements. Elegant beauties with thousand dollar dresses, flamboyant bags, flashy sunglasses, and red high-heels click and clack down cement sidewalks. Illuminated skyscrapers and hotels flicker gold in windows; exciting parties suffocated inside reserved locations. Customers tap-tap-tap their laptops, talk-talk-talk on their Blue-Tooths, and puff-puff-puff cigarettes. Twisted-numbed tongues swirl around black scalding coffee. Trumpets burp complex notes and passers toss coins into cups. Doves soar above city noise and poop on parked Lexus’s. The diverse mixing of new customs, Cultures melt into oceans of communication. Each man, woman, and child coexists. An intertwining of beliefs becomes an attitude of a home. |

Such is the diversity of a large city, everyone busy with their own lives and thoughts; though not, it seems, you. A very observant and descriptive piece; a painting in words and joy to read. I'm going back for another. I would like to have faith in your last line. |
