I probably shouldn't be venting like this, but I'm going to anyway. I know that there are worse things that could happen, and that I'm probably going to sound like a little brat, but oh well... Well, on Wednesday we are going in and choosing our high school majors. My parents have already told me that they want me to go into science. I pretty much went along with it, although I would really like to major in the fine arts... heck, what can ya do? I was even planning on trying to quit writing when I got into college, since it would take all of my energy to get through those horrid science and math classes (and math is NOT my thing!). Last Wednesday, however, I had an experience that really helped me see things a bit more clearly. It helped me realize that my calling is writing. I know that I'm not very good, but I know I can't just give it up and blindly thrust myself into this bottomless pit just because it's what my parents want! Well, I talked to my father about it a few minutes ago. "NO". Just like that. I tried arguing my point. I could have sworn my older sister is in the WVU school of journalism, and that my sister's career major is the fine arts, also! No, I couldn't change. I'm going to be a microbiologist. It's bad enough that I won't be an MD, isn't it? I don't know what to do. I'm seriously considering running away from home. There's really nothing for me here. If I could get ahold of the money thats in my bank account without my mom's signature, I'd probably be on my way right now. I'd walk if I had to! I'd have no idea where I would go, just as far away from here as possible! Well, there's my little vent. Hope it didn't make you cringe too much! I can so relate to this---I absolutely fell in love with anthropology while attending college, easily acing courses that had others pulling their hair out. But unfortunately, my parents seemed to confuse anthropology and archeology, and decided that their savings would not be used to send their daughter overseas to dig in the sand. (Geez...) So then I thought I would switch my major to Fine Arts--another roadblock. This time the arguement was "why study what you already know." For them---it was English Education or Nothing. And, let's face it, it's THEIR money--A GIFT--not an entitlement--so...my official Major when I dropped out was "English Education." Sigh...sometimes, even if the money and the opportunity are there, the heart just isn't. Try to talk to them. Or finance your own college education. But I think you'll find your dreams don't abandon you. And personally? I believe all knowledge contributes to writing. So I guess what I'm saying is, the road is wide open for you right now! Go down as many avenues as ya can, if nothing else? It will make great writing material later!  |

First of all - DO NOT RUN AWAY!!! I will personally hunt you down and take away your 98 Degrees stuff!!! Whew! Now, ok. Give an inch and ask for an inch...tell them you will major in Science and MINOR in some form of writing. Tell them that writing Science reports will take a lot of effort and a writing course is necessary to assist you in this endeavor. Then..when you get to college, talk to your counselor and see if you can 'audit' or sit in on some creative writing courses. If not, save your money and in the summer ON YOUR OWN TIME, take a class on writing....but YOU pay for it.  don't run away don't run away don't run away |

I can't really offer any advice on this dilemma, but I can tell you I'm here if you need to talk. Just as you once extended your hand to me, I extend mine to you. Just don't run. It won't make things any better, and could possibly make things worse. Relish the time you have had home even if its not agreeing with you right now,because one day, all aside, you most certainly will miss it very much. ((HUGS))still d-i-s-c-o-n-n-e-c-t-e-d |

Erica I know this sucks big time, and I'm sorry.  Hon, don't run. That won't solve your problems, but it will make them worse. What about getting Grants on your own to fund your own college? You can do the science thing in H.S. You can even take a year of it in college and always change your mind. You can apply for many grants and things to help you through. Talk to a counselor, at school or even the college counselor, explain your situation, and see what they have to offer you. IN all seriousness, it might be their money, but if it's not what you want, then I would consider it a waste. Why not let you go for something you would obviously love to do. ~hugs~ to ya hon.
