Usually I get inspired after reading something someone else wrote. It could be a phrase, a title, or just a comment made in one of the forums; something will click and I will hammer out a piece. Other times my inspiration comes from what I think I would feel, if I felt something. If I were in love, lust, angry, or lonely. Most of my work is an analysis of what I think a feeling should feel like (in my mind). All in all I suppose I am mostly a fraud, a hack, and I steal other peoples ideas and make up poems about stuff I don't know about. But at least it feels good to write. I once read a phrase in a magazine ad and used it! I listen to music..sometimes the way I feel while listening will inspire me to write. |

Well, my inspiration comes from a lot of places. A lot of the time, it comes from how I'm feeling at the moment I have a pen and paper (or word processor) at hand. Other times, I'm influenced by music, and once, a commercial inspired me (anybody ever heard that Texaco commercial about El BaƱo del Diablo?). Normally, though, the stuff that comes out of this type of inspiration is short poem fragments that sometimes I can use to build into a poem at later times. The Green Polar Bear ![]() |

hm, where does my inspiration come from?? I'd have to say a few sources. 1. My feelings, things that have gone on or are going on in my life. 2. Music of all sorts can inspire me. It can be the tune itself or a phrase or idea of the song. 3. Simply my imagination, something I dream up can inspire my work. 4. My friends, my family, other people. Their lives, their feelings, things happening to them. ------------------ *Krista Knutson* "Your kiss upon my face feels like a brush with grace, baby thats all it takes to take me higher..." wow, where does my inspiration come from? I have just started writing a story on the most wonderful experience I had last week; about waiting in the midst of life for death. The most vivid things we write about come from life, I think, not that imagination isn't powerful or can be vivid. As long as we bring all of ourselves to what we do, I think inspiration is a given. What do you think? |

Freud claimed that dreams were the minds process of sorting out the days experiences, I sort of use poetry for the same I guess. A phrase or an image will occur to me and I'll just free wheel from there. Quite often the original inspiration disappears in the editing as it has led on to something totally different. Though is its something good I may try to reuse it later. Robin |

I find inspiration in life itself. Situations in my past...what I feel fate has in store for me in the future, depending on my decisions....mostly, though, I write about how I feel. Emotion, to me is a very powerful "tool". It helps me to understand myself and how to deal with lifes many obstacles. |

My inspiration comes from all the little voices in my head that speak out to me in thier somber and happy words, telling me what to do and what to write! So if you enjoy anything I do, tell me, and I'll pass it along! ![]() ------------------ ...the things I did not know at first, I learned by doing twice. -Billy Joel |

Most of what I wrote was biblically inspired, though a thought may come from reading what someone else has written. As I read through a book of poetry all I read was disheartening. So many people down and depressed, it inspired me to write about God in thier lives. Something more upbeat! |

Almost always from intense pain or joy/bliss. I really only get inspired by the people I care about. Fiction is another matter - that could be a phrase that sounds like it needs a story built around it. |

I must admit that, almost all of the poetry that I have written comes from my over-riding emotions at the time..Joy, sorrow, whimsy.....!!! Somehow, I find it hard to write a poetry in a structured format, observing meter, syllable, rhyme & the rest. That makes me feel too pressured & puts a kibbosh on my spirit of poetry...Pardon me for my lack of poetic education & ignorance.. So when I see someone take up a challenge & write a neat poetry with not much effort at all, it fills me with AWE..'Coz,thats something I will never be able to do.. Well, I'm not sure what 'inspiration' means. I keep a poetry notebook and though I don't write in it everyday but when I do I always have a lot of ideas -- memory, dreams, imagination, reading. I read constantly. Rough drafts are easy for me (we all write differently) but it's in the rewriting that I start slowing down. Trying to figure out what actually works and doesn't work is, well, hard work for me. Ironically, however, once I actually put something together it's much more satisfying for me than just letting the rough drafts ride. Brad |

Well, I don't really know WHERE my inspiration comes from, but I've found that I write better if I am extremely angry. I'll go months without writing and then someone will tick me off and even if the poem isn't about what I'm angry about, it still comes out. ------------------ "All poets are mad" --RobertBurton |

My inspiration comes from my emotions and what's going on in my life, for the most part. Lately, I've found a lot of inspiration in the teens I work with. There are several who I've written poems for (in fact, those seem to be my "best" ones that get the most responses). Once upon a time, I thought I only wrote when I was miserable. Then I realized I had been miserable for most of my marriage and I never wrote anything. :-) Sometimes my poems are based on conversations I have with friends. (Free Fall was after a 3 hour phone call with a net friend). And sometimes, I'm inspired by the poetry I read in here. Heck, I'm not picky. I'll take inspiration where I can find it. |

Lately my inspiration has been coming up in the wierdest places, but I have accepted the fact that "that" is OK and go with the flow. My dreams, reading books, taking a particular line from anything [newspaper, book, article, PiP, an inanimate object, an actual occurrence....] LIFE. It's all out there for the taking, the interpretation, the rendition. I cannot express how grateful I am to whatever spirit/sprite caused me to run across this site, however, as it has taken my sleeping muse, shook it awake, and told it that it's OK, there ARE real people out there that feel as you do, and whether your work gets published or not, there is a great sense of adventure in sharing it with others. You are ALL great inspiration! [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 09-03-99).] |
