state of confusion

Big Game

Each day is spent the same,
walking in a roundabout
of conflicting directions,
no signs pointing
which way to go;
to begin anew the next morning,
SORRY kicking hope
back to square 1.

The kids look upon this confusion
as a sign of failure,
already basing success in LIFE
on how many properties can be amassed
and by the rainbow of leaflets
tucked neatly beneath a board.

My son rapidly calls out patterns,
flipping cards -- he knows a SET
when he sees one; my daughter tries
a little harder and catches on
while I watch the dizzying flash
of zigzags, lines and squiggles.

I tell them I’ve never cared much for moving around a board;
the games I play dovetail into this larger one
called raising the children. They nod as if they understand,
twitching to return to shaking dice and advancing pieces,
but I’m still not sure I’m getting through,
so I take their hands to still their minds;
they roll their eyes and simultaneously say

Mom, we get it.

Smiling here, as I understand the way this plays out, and have also never been much for games. They always seem to understand more than we realize, don't they?

They are amazing...we think of them as
children,  treat them as children, expect
them to sometimes think like adults and
in the end...it comes down to just what
happened to you...and of course their
expressions say so very much.

Thanx for the reminder...

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

This made me look back on my own time

I was treated from the get-go like a Young Adult...which made my grandmother miserable because she saw me losing a childhood...

I saw the differences of the raising of the brood from my mother's eyes...my brother and sister were given longer childhoods to enjoy...

the games were everywhere, always.  If we dared say we were bored, then we were given extra chores...so better to get involved in a book or game with brother or sister or do anything... ...rather than another chore.

But games were often family affairs, and I remember the laughing and joking and lots of teasing...

So I see both sides of this big game, Corinne, and I know and share your concern, but on the flip side of this poem, is the fact that your children are bonding with each other, and that they are not in front of the TV.  [Don't you just hate Ms. Pollyanna? ]

Hugs, dear...and I'm so glad you had a chance to spend time with your muse.  Mine has gone south for the winter, I think.

You watch the beginning of the Gordyin Knot.
You can only see the needle weave the plot.
Enjoyed

I like this.  Quite clever how you incorporated the names of the games while you were describing them.  I have to say Set is one of my favorite games, but it's not often you see someone talking about it as a classic.
A refreshing and fun read.  Thank you for sharing.
