The Fairy Ring

Just here I mean, where the tree once stood,
and where its fruit lies under sod,
a savor in each grain of soil, to make
a fairy ring for those to see who can,
and we must see for we remember well,
while the fairies dance,
               they dance
         whether we believe or no.

Then, oh in those days the good fruit taken
all of it so carefully taken to remember
while the rest fell careless
and the world waxed rich for a moment
and still around that fruited tree
the gentle spirits walk at times
               they walk
        whether we believe or no.

The grass tells all, and we can see the tree
as if it stood here still, the sunlight touch
in flowered shades of memory;
see how it stands here almost tall,
frail pink in springtime, yellow in the fall,
and round this living tree the angels sing
               they sing
         whether we believe or no.

This ring is all that’s left to us, a little mound,
   a round of changing green,
a tiny rim of mushrooms coming too
on warmest summer mornings, they will show us
where the fairies danced in moonlight
and we'll feel them ever dancing,
               dancing still
         whether we believe or no.

                            -JAF-

For this lady of course. This is her poem of that tree. Martie, you inspire me.

Have always found it a little easier...
a lot more pleasant...
to believe.

Well done, Sir.

There is a passage in Toni Morrison's Beloved... where she's speaking of rememory... "even if I don't think it, even if I die, the picture of what I did, or knew, or saw is still out there. Right in the place where it happened." However talented that writer, you've explained better and more beautifully how some places are special and always will be... spirits linger regardless of the now... because of what was... and will be forever in the heart.

You've captured magic in this loving offering... superb work!

the gentle spirits walk at times

And miracles happen... whether we believe or no. *S*
