Reposted in memory of Michelle

The Flowering Peach

Michelle sleeps
her features cloudy
and just the slightest trace
of light where
the fine hair's curled.

Michelle sleeps
receding into air
that blows fragrance
from the grass
to recall
how specks of sun
colored her eyes.

Michelle sleeps
I see her smile only
when the peach tree blooms
in February.
*****

The Weight of the Butterfly Flower

The flowering peach,
a daughter’s bloom.
Each February
she lived
in tiny pink bud,
her tree fed my memory,
flitted across my vision
with nectar so sweet with sorrow
that the sky wept.

Oh, such weight
the delicate pink
butterfly flower held.
It took her place somehow
and lived for her each year.
A tree-gift from the fluttering
girls and boys of second grade,
now almost middle aged
with children named
Michelle, perhaps.

She will always be eight,
the bright and moving child
of my youth,
so spark and full of fire.
The first that captured my heart
and held it,
she holds it still.

She died again this fall, Michelle,
her leaves turned and bid a final
tremble to the ground.
The tree no longer lives,
just a sentinel stark and bleak
its gamine trunk.

But
under the canopy that burned
my heart again
from brown and rotting leaves
emerges the everlasting
circle of creation,
a fragile new beginning
strong with claims of yes.

What beautifully woven images....it is sad that someone you obviously loved has departed, but what's important is that the memory lives on.  And you enshrine that memory wonderfully with your words.  I am in awe.

Martie,

I just have to tell you, Rosemary got her snow this morning... I don't know how long it's going to keep up... I'd like to think as long as your poetry keep running on. Did Michelle ever get to see the snow..?

Love for now, dale

In Our house - we've August angst when Dane was born - and each September now for eight years - when a memorial 'run/walk' for Cancer is successfully run in his memory - and the most telling for me - in October when he died.  Alongside our home grows a 'Monkey Puzzle' he planted - now over six feet tall - memories abound - You must know I understand as much as one can -

Martie, I love these tender, eloquent poems of the peach tree blossoms, in memory of your precious Michelle - they always touch my heart deeply, as you know.  My heart goes out to you, and my prayers are with you.

If anyone would ever need to find a definition of "Mother's love" ... all they need do is read one of your Michelle poems and they would have the perfect definition. This along with all of your Michelle poems has a way to touching us and reminding us how fragile but yet how beautiful life is and I know she is hugging you right now and sending you kisses of comfort. Beautiful and exquisite are your words my friend. Sending you hugs of my own.

Martie how I missed this I will never know, but know this, I thought I had forgotten how to cry with life's hardness, but you have through that love of Michelle, opened a well of tears this day.  This brings such a mess of emotions up for me, but you understand that - love does that, real love.  Thank you for always letting us share your journey with her.

What an appropriate time for this to come back. Ah Michelle you are so tenderly remembered.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
