For My "Little Brother" David

It was the near blind leading the bound
through fog shroud night on uncertain ground
with no guiding light but plenty of noise
a fearful journey for two timid boys.

Septuagenarians recall the scene
how the older'd let nothing in between,
old family albums should one scan
would reveal these toddlers hand in hand.

Hop A Long Cassidy in black and white,
little plastic soldiers in fancy's flight,
a fort in the woods, the cowboy hats,
self taught knowledge of the ball and bat.

A Loving mother during the day,
fear of the failed father Hemingway
whose altered life was immovable beast,
unfit for family to say the least.

Expunction of stanzas that tear at him
for their pain would keep step literatim
and abrase the old scars dispensibly bled
on boys now men, why the devil's long dead?

Little man though fatherhood never taught,
through fifties and sixties all battles fought,
arduous road through the violent night
to the level glen and it's kinder light.

Gray haired men are at last composin'
in softer light where there's no opposin'
as once there was in a past not chosen
for brother's Love's e'er warm hearts reposin'.

"Happy people have no history" - French Proverb

There is nothing like the love of family.  You've written of it very well, RS.

Although an only child I may be, an excellent read this was for me.  Thanks for sharing.

True to your style for which you stand out, Richard, this had meanings behind the lines which I can only begin to infer.  Your levels of depth in lines such as "self taught knowledge of the ball and bat", to point out but one, are very impressive.  I agree with Poet deVine -- this one took me through a gamut of impressions and feelings as well.  Very solid work.  (and a very cool title too -- that's what first caught my attention!)

The time spent by mom's literary polishing shines through this one, Richard. I like the way you play with words and phrases, starting with the title tease. When I got to Hopalong, you put me right back on the floor in black and white, riding the trails with Hoppie.
Thank you for the morning mind fun and the memories.

A wonderful poem that shows clearly the love between two brothers as they grew up together from childhood into adulthood. Very well done. I enjoyed this walk through time with you.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

From the black and white scenes to present..your brotherly ties are still deeply wrought. I have only sisters..but they know and I know...things no others know. That's how it is. A special bond. Thank you for allowing us to peer in on yours.

Sincerely,
Regina

I kept meaning to get to this one and it kept slipping by me, but now I'm glad I did, and timely enough as well, for my brother's birthday is tomorrow, and while this is a brother to brother write, I think a sister could slip in and say some of this as well...

as a thank you to him for putting up with his older sister,

and for looking out for me when I needed it...

Thank you Richard.
